I’ve been a licensed esthetician in Indiana since 2006. Within a couple months of becoming licensed, I began working at my local MAC counter. This gave me TONS of experience working with different makeup products, skin tones and types, and dealing with the public when it came to their makeup needs.Please tell us about your self, and how you started as a PRO MUA?
After nearly 7yrs of working makeup retail, the opportunity came about for me to start my own mobile makeup business full-time, traveling on location providing my makeup services to clients when and where needed. I specialize in bridal makeup, but I also provide my makeup services for all events: photography, print/commercial work, tv/film, and everything in between.
The highlights of being a professional makeup artist-you get to meet people of all walks of life, and you’re in a different setting every single day. It’s never the same day twice, even if it’s the same type of work two days in a row. Every day is different, every client is different, every face is different, and every experience they share with you is different. And each of these differences change and shape you for the better.What are the highlights and downfalls of being a pro MUA?
The downfalls of being a makeup artist-your personal time is sacrificed pursuing a career in this industry. The majority of your work is scheduled on the weekends, when you would be attending personal events with friends and family. Want to go to your friend’s wedding? You’re probably working one yourself that weekend. Want to schedule some vacation time? Better plan it months or even a year in advance, otherwise it’s going to be a long time before you get more than a day to two to yourself.
It’s hard not having a “regular” schedule like most people, but in my opinion, the pros really do outweigh the cons!
What inspires you?
I get a lot of my inspiration from nature. When I’m having artist’s block, and can’t come up with new ideas, I’ll look at the all the different colour combinations and shapes found in nature. Growing up, I always wanted to be a biologist (I know, the complete opposite of makeup artistry), so animals and nature were my passion. Just seeing all the different colours, colour combinations, and patterns that exist in nature can give you so many different ideas when you think you’ve tried them all, or even ideas you never would have thought of!
What are the top 3 advices you can give our fans and Pros alike?
1. Never give up. Don’t let what anyone says about you or your passion stop you from achieving your goals. The only opinion about you that matters is your own.
2. Try on different hats until you find one that fits. Experiment to find out what kind of makeup artist you want to be. Try one part of the industry for awhile, and if it doesn’t work out, that’s ok. Not all hats fit and look good on everyone.
3. It’s ok to say “No”. Don’t feel like you have to say yes to everything and everyone out there. Spreading yourself too thin doesn’t do anyone any good, especially yourself. The more you say “No”, the more time you have to say “Yes” to the things are are truly important to you!
What was your most exciting point in your career so far?
I’d definitely have to say working on my first celebrity client has brought the most excitement so far! I was so nervous! I never would have thought I’d be working on a celebrity! I mean, I’m just a bridal makeup artist in Indiana. Who am I, right!? But isn’t that how everyone begins? But now that I’ve accomplished that, I can tackle anything!
The Étude palette, of course! It’s a staple in my kit, and I love me a good matte shadow! But I’m also a sucker for the individual shadows. Don’t make me choose!!!What is your favorite SauceBox Product?
Everything has its beauty, but not everyone see it. - ConfuciusFavorite quote that always picks you up?
There is beauty in everything - beauty in life, even beauty in death. When we think of nature, the sunrise is beautiful, as is the sunset. There’s beauty in all the new life of Spring, but I find the the colours of Fall even more beautiful, as the bright colours start to fade and give way to some of my favourite tones and shades.
Beginnings and endings are both beautiful. You just have to be open to see the beauty in all of it.
